This publication is a documentation of the IN TRANSIT project by the Goethe-Instituts in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, England, Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands.
IN TRANSIT connected 15 citizens’ initiatives from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Scotland, England, Ireland and the Netherlands that promote cooperative projects and user-led urban planning processes in their neighbourhoods, cities and villages. Through local long-term engagement, the selected initiatives are actively engaged in seeking qualitative and sustainable improvements to living conditions within their society. Their economic models do not prioritise financial return, but rather the realisation of their vision for more habitable towns and communities offering equal opportunity. Initiatives create infrastructure in shrinking villages, organise festivals, communal suppers and other events in public spaces. They encourage alternative ways of living in times of gentrification, design local food systems, facilitate access to unused spaces, and create places to meet, exchange and learn.

Klaus Kirsten and Heinz Nather are considered outsiders among the prominent architects of postwar modernism in Berlin. Their buildings convey a worldliness and optimism rarely so evident in the era of the West German economic miracle. The architects first met during their studies and remained friends throughout their practice and lives. In the 1950s and 60s, they developed unique, unconventional single-family homes and architecturally outstanding factory buildings, created under the influences of modern American and Italian architecture. The buildings of the former Rotaprint factory constructed in Berlin in the 1950s serve as the starting point for their rediscovery. Today, ExRotaprint is an artist-initiated model for nonexclusive urban development that operates independent of financial profit.

Makeshift implies a temporary or expedient substitute for something else, something missing. Make_Shift City extends the term to embrace urban design strategies. Make_Shift City implies a condition of insecurity: the inconstant, the imperfect and the indeterminate. It also implies the designing act of shifting or reinterpretation as a form of urban détournement. Austerity urbanism and the increasing scarcity of resources among the cities and boroughs of Europe in particular has far-reaching consequences for civic space. Where there is a lack of regular planning processes, gaps arise as open spaces that enable an ad-hoc informal urban design. What often results is a process of urban commoning: the renegotiation of shared spaces and shared resources.
